With its excellent nutritional balance, hōtō is a comforting meal that satisfies both body and soul. In addition to hōtō, the restaurant also serves udon, other noodle dishes, and a wide variety of side plates—perfect for sharing and enjoying a warm, relaxed evening.

What’s the Difference Between Hōtō and Udon?
The biggest difference lies in how the noodles are made.
・Udon is prepared by kneading wheat flour with water and salt, resting the dough, and then cutting it into even strips. It is typically served in broths made with bonito or kelp.
・Hōtō, on the other hand, is unique to Yamanashi. The dough is kneaded with only water—no salt—and then rolled out thin and cut immediately without resting. The noodles are simmered together with pumpkin, taro, and other root vegetables in a miso-based soup, creating a warming, rustic dish.
Interestingly, just next to Oshino Hakkai, in Fujiyoshida City, you’ll find another famous regional specialty: Yoshida Udon. Known for its extremely thick, firm noodles, it’s often called “the udon you chew” for its distinctive texture. If you’re in the area, trying both Hōtō and Yoshida Udon is highly recommended!
