This spectacular sight cannot be seen year-round—it only occurs when specific conditions of time, location, and alignment between the sun and Mt. Fuji are met, under clear weather. Because of these strict natural requirements, Diamond Fuji is an extremely rare and precious phenomenon.
Among the most famous viewing locations are Lake Yamanakako in Yamanashi and Lake Tanukiko in Shizuoka, which attract countless photographers each year hoping to capture this magnificent scene.
In some cases, when the reflection of the sun appears on the surface of the lake, visitors can witness the extraordinary “Double Diamond Fuji” (two suns visible—one in the sky and one reflected on the lake). Setting Diamond Fuji
The Setting Diamond Fuji can be viewed from the eastern side of Mt. Fuji, when the sun sets directly behind the summit.
Lake Yamanakako and Hana-no-Miyako Park are among the most famous spots, with Lake Yamanakako often referred to as the “sacred site of Diamond Fuji.” The area even hosts seasonal events such as Yamanakako Diamond Fuji Weeks, celebrating this natural spectacle.
During sunset, the sun slowly descends diagonally from the upper right to the lower left, meeting the summit of Mt. Fuji before vanishing in a burst of brilliant light. This rare moment lasts only about two minutes, making it especially captivating for photographers.
Compared to the rising version, the setting Diamond Fuji is easier to time and observe, as the movement of the sun is more visible. However, it can sometimes appear slightly before the official sunset time, so visitors should prepare early to avoid missing the chance.
